THE ONGOING NEGOTIATION ON THE U.S.-UNITED KINGDOM BILATERAL FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

Abstract: In the first months of Joseph Biden's term, Donald Trump's commercial legacy endures, the current president focusing on resolving internal affairs. However, the COVID-19 pandemic emphasised the fragility of the existing supply chains and the need to rely on strong partners to overcome crises. In this context, the commercial negotiations between the U.S. and the U.K. entered a recalibration phase. When released, the negotiation objectives of the U.S. aimed to protect the American exporters better while reducing its trade deficit, while the U.K. aimed to ensure a safety net post-Brexit. The paper provides a timeline of the negotiations, emphasising the leading positions, interests and sensitive issues, concluding that the future of the U.S.-U.K. free trade agreement is still uncertain due to the current diverging negotiation objectives.
