NEW AND OLD CHALLENGES OF MIGRATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Abstract: This paper analyses the social and economic challenges of the migration in general and in specific periods, such as those during Covid-19 pandemic and those against the background of the war in Ukraine. The impact of the new challenges, the implications for EU labour and employment markets, as well as general and specific migration policies are presented. Of the estimated 4 million refugees expected to arrive in EU countries following the war in Ukraine, some may decide to stay in the host countries. In this context, the ability of host states to integrate refugees and build social cohesion withthem is paramount. The research methodology is based on the analysis of social policies from the perspective of European integration, starting from the statistical data provided by EUROSTAT and the specialized literature on migration.
