MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE EUROPEAN UNION AND URUGUAY RELATED TO RENEWABLE ENERGIES. URUGUAY CASE STUDY: RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICIES

Abstract: Latin America and the Caribbean area are one of the important actors on the way of the global transition to clean energies. In this region, Uruguay is positioned in the vanguard of the use of renewable energies, the progress made and the high potential as a supplier of green hydrogen being recognized on the occasion of the 3 rd. EU-CELAC Summit. By signing the EU-Uruguay Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Cooperation on Renewable Energies, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Hydrogen, the prospect of new European investments was opened on the road to the common objective of achieving carbon neutrality with a horizon of 2050. The present paper provides an overview of the Uruguayan energetic context, the measures and policies implemented in the renewable energy sector, the strategies and documents adopted, the perspectives including in the field of production, storage, transport and use of green hydrogen and derivatives, as well as the state of EU-Uruguay cooperation in this sector.
