Abstract: On January 1st, 2016, Spain has celebrated the 30th anniversary of its EU membership. Thisevent provides the opportunity to bring to the forefront of attention the path followed by Spain in orderto fulfil the criteria for EU membership, but also the country’s benefits and failures as a member state,as well as the solutions identified to cope with the sovereign debt crisis in the Euro Zone.In the first section, we address the key moments of preparation for accession to the EuropeanEconomic Community (EEC), with a focus on the transition to democracy. In the next part, wehighlight the consolidation of democracy during the process of EEC accession negotiations. In thethird section, we point out the transformation of the Spanish economy with the adoption of the acquiscommunautaire, and outline its current shape, in the light of several macroeconomic indicators.
