Philosophical Foundations of Information Modeling

Abstract: This article attempts to provide some philosophical grounding for the practice of information modeling by introducing four key metaphysical concepts that are at the heart of information modeling. These are the concept of identity, the problem of universals, teleology, and the correspondence vs. coherence views of truth. These concepts are first explained and then their relevance to information modeling is discussed. Implications for the practice of information modeling and research in information modeling are also addressed.
