Abstract: Highlights the institutional, structural and political factors which account for Italy's high level and distinctive pattern of self- employment in comparison to other industrial countries, including persistent economic dualism, labour market rigidities, a favourable regulatory framework, the role of State and the extensive decentralisation of production.
