Abstract:
Examines the situation of women in the membership and leadership of the trade unions in South Africa, especially those affiliated to the major trade union federation, Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). Includes a brief historical description of the events of the 1980s; a description of the South African economy and its sectors; a discussion of the demographic information concerning women in the workforce; a discussion of the role of women in unions; and an analysis of a case-study undertaken on the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU).
