Surviving on the street: the ambulatory street traders of santiago

Contreras V. and Thomas J.

ILO Working Papers from International Labour Organization

Abstract: Study reveals that the majority of ambulatory street vendors in Santiago are heads of household, i.e. the main wage-earners, and have been working as street vendors for a long time. A significant number of women enter this activity when their male partners lose their jobs in the formal sector. Others are forced into the labour market by the death or ill-health of a husband or being deserted by the former breadwinner.
