Abstract:
Based on data for six countries within the West Africa Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) in 1997. Develops a method for the development of a "trust index" to assess the amount of risk a prospective member is facing when joining a mutual savings and loan institution. Describes the characteristics of mutual savings and loan institutions in the region and proposes improvements in the collection of more accurate statistical data.
