Abstract: Technological innovation and a competitive market place have brought about major changes in telecommunications. The National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences have listed information and communications as two of the critical technologies essential for American global competitiveness. It is thus timely for Interfaces to publish a group of articles on telecommunications. The four papers in this section represent different aspects of telecommunication systems.
