Abstract: In many OR problems there is a feeling at the end of the study that by the adoption of a simpler approach the task could have been completed with less effort than was actually applied.A survey was made of about 100 defence OR tasks carried out by Australian workers. The studiers' views on whether a simpler approach would have been preferable and the associated reasons were sought. These views are analysed and discussed. The survey supports the view that a simple approach is worthwhile in many military OR tasks. However, one class of problem was identified where a more comprehensive approach was preferred. Some hints on how to achieve a simple approach are given.
