Abstract:
Aggregate price indices, which measure variations in nominal prices, are of the utmost importance for any country`s economy. This work is an exploratory investigation into the development of the prices of health plans in Brazil between May 2001 and April 2005, based on the price indices published by the following Brazilian institutions: Departamento Intersindical de Estatística e Estudos Socioeconômicos, Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas, Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística and Ipea. These indices were compared with the price rises set by the Agência Nacional de Saúde Suplementar (Regulatory Agency of Supplementary Health) as of 2001 with a view to answering a basic question whether the price rises of individual health plans tracked the inflation rate, and whether these rises were in line with the changes to costs in the health sector.
