No 1317, Discussion Papers from Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada - IPEA

Abstract: We study some aspects of organ transplantation activities in Brazilian states, in the years of 2004, 2005 and 2006. The average waiting times were estimated by queueing theory models. We found that average waiting time for transplantation reduced for cornea and pancreas; increased for liver, heart and kidney/pancreas; and showed a somewhat erratic variability for kidney and lung. We also estimated large performance disparities among states, according to various performance indicators. Average waiting times are shortest in the states of South, Southeast and Midwest of Brazil. These states also display highest transplantation and productivity rates and present the largest transplantation teams per capita figures. By using regression models, we estimate a positive association between the transplants per capita rates and the per capita transplantation teams rates available in the states.
