Abstract: A finalidade desta investigação é calcular um índice de desenvolvimento rural (IDR) para os municípios do estado de Goiás, no interregno censitário 1996-2000. Para tanto, a ideia defendida é que o estado apresenta uma estrutura rural heterogênea em que coexistem áreas com notável grau de desenvolvimento e, em contraste, outras que apresentam baixo dinamismo. Para a realização do objetivo proposto no trabalho foram utilizados os recursos técnicos da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental e adotou-se o método analítico descritivo. Os resultados encontrados demonstram que, no período analisado, o estado apresentou, de modo geral, baixo nível de desenvolvimento rural. No entanto, percebe-se que a região Centro-Sul apresentou maiores valores para o IDR em comparação à região Centro-Norte, o que demonstra que o processo de modernização do campo aconteceu de forma mais efetiva nessa porção do território. The purpose of this research is to calculate an index of rural development (IDR) to the municipalities of the state of Goiás, in the interregnum census 1996-2000. Therefore, the idea is that the state has a heterogeneous structure in rural areas that coexist with remarkable degree of development areas and, in contrast, others have low dynamism. To achieve the proposed objective at work we used the technical resources of bibliographic and documentary research and adopted the descriptive analytical method. The results show that, in the analyzed period, the state showed generally low level of rural development. However, it is clear that the South-Central region showed the highest values for the IDR in comparison to the North Central region, which demonstrates that the process of modernization of the field more effectively happened in this part of the territory.
