Rural Iowa Manufacturing Plants Which Closed From 1965 to 1975

Arnold Paulsen

ISU General Staff Papers from Iowa State University, Department of Economics

Abstract: Manufacturing plants leave rural areas. About 4000 jobs were lost each year from 1965 to 1975 in rural areas of Iowa due to outmigration or failure of plants employing over 20 workers. Thus over 100 plants employ ing 40 workers needed to open each year in rural areas of Iowa just to maintain the volume of manufacturing employment.
