Abstract:
Entrepreneurship has been a focus at Iowa State for many years, but formal emphasis began in the 1990s. The entrepreneurship club began in 1996, a year after Professor Howard Van Auken began teaching a course in entrepreneurship. The Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship also opened in 1996. In 1997, the university launched a cross-campus minor in entrepreneurship and a graduate certificate shortly afterward. In 2009, Kevin Kimle was hired as the inaugural Rastetter Chair of Agricultural Entrepreneurship along with the start of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative. Formal graduate study in entrepreneurship began in 2017 with the creation of a PhD in entrepreneurship. A $50 million gift in 2017 by entrepreneurs Jerry and Debbie Ivy established the Ivy College of Business, the home for academic entrepreneurship programs. A master of entrepreneurship was launched in 2021. Entrepreneurship is now included as an element of the University Strategic Plan in support of the goal of being the University that creates opportunities and forges new frontiers.
