A chapter in Recent Advances, New Perspectives and Applications in Strategic Management from IntechOpen
Abstract:
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, global organizations have significantly shifted their operational approaches, adopting new methodologies to address emerging challenges. McKinsey & Company's 2021 report indicated that 42% of businesses experienced a negative impact on their competitive positions due to the pandemic. Several organizations struggled with strategic planning, making them vulnerable to shifts in business trends. At the same time, the fight for sustainability intensified challenges in executing strategic changes and outdated traditional approaches to strategic positioning. Recently, organizations have shifted their view of strategy from a static property to a dynamic activity, known as strategy-as-practice (SAP). Johnson, Melin, Whittington, and Golsorkhi et al. explain that SAP focuses on the everyday processes involved in strategy formulation and execution and as a shift from assessing strategy outcomes to analyzing strategy-making processes. This approach emphasizes the strategy's social and cultural dimensions, viewing it as a collaborative activities rather than just a plan. Raytheon Technologies (RTX), a world-leading aerospace and defense company employs a streamlined framework guided by SAP principles to ensure resilience and high performance in a complex environment. Insight from Sr. Manager III/Strategist Mr. Pleasant highlights the effectiveness of this strategic approach in the aerospace and defense sectors.
