Abstract: Though numerous surveys where people quantify their happiness or satisfaction are available, economic research has not analysed the association between these variables and their socioeconomic characteristics until recent years. By using the 1995 world values survey for Spain, this article aims to identify the factors associated with the happiness and satisfaction of Spaniards. Age, health and marital status are factors clearly significant. Unemployment affects life and economic satisfaction but, surprisingly, does not seem to affect happiness. Income is strongly related to economic satisfaction, but does not seem to be related to happiness or life satisfaction. Aunque se dispone de numerosas encuestas donde los individuos cuantifican su felicidad o satisfacción, la investigación económica no ha analizado la asociación entre estas variables y sus características socioeconómicas hasta hace escasos años. Mediante la utilización de la encuesta mundial de valores de 1995 para España, el presente artículo persigue identificar los factores asociados a la felicidad y satisfacción de los españoles. La edad, la salud y el estado civil son factores claramente significativos. El desempleo afecta a la satisfacción vital y a la económica, pero, sorprendentemente, no parece afectar a la felicidad. La renta está estrechamente relacionada con la satisfacción económica de los individuos, pero no parece estarlo con la felicidad o la satisfacción vital.
