Abstract: The paper looks at the potential of co-operatives as an institution to manage water distribution for irrigation by studying the Chanda village in Maharashtra. The study concludes that the co-operative approach to distribution of canal water can not only be an efficient and equitable system of water distribution as against the earlier centralized government system, but it also has the potential to be applied to more such areas of public goods, especially natural resources which need to be conserved or used judiciously.Length: pp.601-611
