River basin organisations in India: an overview

Abstract:
The paper proposes river basin management as crucial to development and stresses the need of proper management. It looks at the various river basin organizations formed in India, lists their functions and performance. The paper concludes with pointing out the various impediments \u2013 political, economic and institutional \u2013 in formation of RBOs in the Indian context.
