Abstract:
Distributed enterprise systems generate operational events across multiple autonomous service boundaries, yet conventional event sourcing architectures lack the semantic context required to reconstruct meaningful, cross-service audit trails. This gap constrains organizational capacity for regulatory compliance, anomaly investigation, and root-cause analysis in complex processing environments. Semantic Event Sourcing (SES) is proposed as an architectural extension of the event sourcing pattern that embeds structured semantic metadata — including intent, actor context, causal references, and domain ontology alignments — directly within event envelopes at the point of emission. By anchoring event records to shared ontological schemas, SES enables queries and trace reconstructions that conventional append-only event logs cannot efficiently support. This article presents a structured architectural framework for SES-enabled distributed traceability, covering the semantic event envelope model, ontological alignment strategies, a layered architectural design, and the trade-offs associated with adoption at enterprise scale. Application scenarios in financial services, healthcare data pipelines, and supply chain management illustrate the practical scope of the approach. Implementation considerations including semantic middleware requirements, schema governance, and scalability challenges are examined alongside comparative analysis against established distributed tracing standards. The framework positions SES as a principled architectural response to the growing demand for semantically rich, auditable, and replayable event records in enterprise-grade distributed systems.
