Abstract:
Supreme Court judgments to local police records. This rapid growth has increased the need for automated tools to summarize long legal texts efficiently. This review explores recent research work in legal text summarization in India, analysing twenty important studies. The approaches range from rule-based and extractive methods to deep learning, hybrid models, and graph-based techniques. Some studies also address multilingual fairness and ethical concerns. The review highlights key aspects such as datasets, preprocessing, model design, and performance. It also identifies major challenges, including complex legal language, multilingual translation issues, context sensitivity, and privacy concerns. Future research should focus on building smarter, more accurate, and privacy-aware systems suited to India’s legal framework.
