Distinguishing Between Non-Smokers, Casual Smokers, and Compulsive Smokers: Evidence from Malaysia

Abstract: This study investigates the correlation between socio-demographic factors and smoking status of non-smokers, casual smokers, and compulsive smokers. Data were obtained from 2,061 respondents from the Malaysia Non-Communicable Disease Surveillance-1. Ordered probit analysis was conducted and marginal effects of smoking status calculated. Results from ethnic segmentation show that retired Malays and Chinese above 46 years have lower propensities to be casual or compulsive smokers than those below 30 years. Education is a deterring factor as primary/grade and high school educated Malays are less likely to be non-smokers than tertiary educated individuals. Low income Indians/others have higher probabilities of being casual or compulsive smokers than lower-middle income earners. Males of all ethnic backgrounds have higher propensities to smoke than females. Based on these results, several policy implications are suggested.
