Abstract:
Abstract Based on the micro-data from listed companies in China, we adopt the fixed effects model, machine learning algorithms, and causal mediation model to explore the relationship between green public procurement (GPP) and green sustainable development (GSD) of enterprises. We show that (1) GPP has a promoting influence on GSD, and it is verified by a series of robustness checks; (2) GPP promotes GSD by enhancing the green innovation and ESG performance; (3) GPP plays a positive role on GSD of non-state-owned enterprises, industrial enterprises and politically connected enterprises. Our study can provide theoretical and practical implications for governments to make the policy of green procurement and promote enterprises to achieve green sustainable development.
