Traveler’s interactive decision-making behavior between itinerary and mode choice using Copula-based discrete-count joint modeling

Abstract: Abstract We analyzed the interactive nature of traveler decision-making behavior between mode choice and travel itinerary in intra-destination trips. A new methodological framework, the copula-based discrete-count joint model, was used to evaluate air arrival visitors to Jeju Island, South Korea. We modeled traveler interactive decision-making by jointly specifying the binary logit model for mode choice and the zero truncated Poisson regression model for itinerary. Seven different copula structures were applied to determine the decision order between mode choice and itinerary. The analysis results showed that travelers chose transportation mode first, prior to making a trip itinerary. The unobserved common variables between two decisions had a positive correlation, with the Student t-copula as their dependency structure. Travel characteristics were found to significantly affect both choices, except the day of the week variable. Findings of this study highlight the importance of considering the decision order for trip management in inter-regional destinations.
