Can The European Union Be Considered as a Compensator for Serbian Nationalism?

Abstract: This study investigates the role of the European Union (EU) on moderation of Serbian nationalism which can be considered as one of the most effective and destructive nationalism within the Balkans. As it is seen on the cases of 1st Yugoslavia (The Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes) and Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, all the major political reunion attempts in the Balkans firstly entered the Serbian domination and finally collapsed as a result of ethnic nationalism which is mostly applied by the Serbian party. Today, the “New Balkan Order” is shaped based on the EU membership intentness of the Balkan states. In other words, contemporarily modernization and democratization are the most expected two aims of the EU from the young Balkan states. Likewise, for other Balkan countries, EU membership sets one of the most important foreign policy goal of the Serbian foreign policy. According to the findings of the study, EU membership process creates a historical chance for both Serbia and other Balkan countries to modernize their political and social systems and to transform their chronic ethnic nationalism tendency into simple patriotism.
