Abstract:
It is important to observe whetber real wages increase or decrease with economic growth to examine tbe changes of poverty line and income distribution. Makali and Sri Hartoyo (1978) conducted a study on real wages in West Java and Collier et al (1982) in Java by using tbe price of rice as tbe deflator. Indeed rice is tbe staple and tbe rural bouse holds in Java spended 64% of their budget on rice in 1971. But by 1980 this figure decreased to 52%. Instead of using tbe rice price index as tbe deflator, this study uses tbe price index of 9 essential commodities to estimate tbe changes of real wages. This study examines tbe real wages of beers and laborers in the rural area of West Java. Ibe author shows hoers' real wages increased by 3% from 1971 tol 981 and tbat of laborers by 4%
