Abstract:
This article investigates the household income distribution and expenditure pattern in Indonesia using data provided by the "Sistem Neraca Sosial Ekonomi" (the Indonesian translation for the original term "Social Accoun ting Ma trix –SAM "). This article introduces the SAM framework, especially that of the Indonesian SAM, in order to provide a brief grasp of what is SAM and how household income distribution/income and expenditure patterns can be drawn from the framework. Also, brief concepts of income, expenditure etc used in the Indonesian SAM are explained. The other part of the article shows the facts on household income and expenditure based on the 1975 and 1980 Indonesian SAM. At the end, some results are presented; among others: although wages and salaries are not enough to finance household expenditures, the "welfare" seems to increase because households have other source of income; i.e. property income, which conttributes highly to the total household income.
