Economics and Finance in Indonesia, 1996, vol. 44, 55-73

Abstract: Since the early 1990s the inflation rate in Indonesia has been nearly two digits. Some people or economic researchers believe that this is a sign of overheating economy. In other words, the high rate of inf.lation is caused mainly by an excess demand in the economy. While, some others state that this is a problem from the supply-side, or a reflection of high-cost economy. This paper is not going to draw again a new econonKtric test of inflation, since there are already some empirical studies on that matters. The main aim of this paper is to create a general discussion on this issue, namely whether the high inflation rate in Indonesia is a demand-side or a supply-side phenomenon?
