Abstract: Known mainly for his political career, the conservative P. P. Carp was also a man of letters. As such, he introduced himself to the specialists in this field as a reviewer of works created by various authors (B. P. Haşdeu, G. Sion and R. Roman) and as a translator (W. Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Othello and Al. von Humboldt’s On Steppes and Deserts). His literary activity showed that not only was he someone who knew well the masterpieces of European literature, but also someone who had good knowledge of literary theory. His literary critiques and translations (the only Romanian who translated two Shakespearian works in the 19th century) represented the practical application of Junimea association’s project to create a national identity in the multicultural European area of the second part of the abovementioned century.
