Abstract:
The paper addresses both the Romanian and European policies for entrepreneurship, in conjunction with the objectives of sustainable development of urban regions. We shall present the initiative of a private university from Romania to develop entrepreneurial abilities, through educational projects, with the specific purpose to create the necessary background for the development of Small and Medium – sized Enterprises, which can be furthermore pillars of the urban development. It introduces the concepts of entrepreneurship education and urban development, as they are defined by the European Commission. On one hand, the entrepreneurship refers to individual’s ability and capacity to implement their ideas. On the other hand, entrepreneurial education leads to developing SMEs. Their specific profile is preferred to large industrial initiatives, precisely because they are intended to support sustainable urban development. We start on the premise that small businesses are friendlier to the environment and human habitat in general, representing the pillars of urban habitat configuration in a sustainable manner. The case study presents the Strategic Project Regional Cooperation for Excellency in Entrepreneurship, financed by European Social Fund Operational Programme Human Resources Development 2007-2013 and developed for the period between 2009 / 2011. Even if it is a project with seven national partners and a transnational one, with a very comprising set of indicators, after 29 months since its beginning the most indicators have been reached, most of them being overcome.The case study represents a concrete example of successful programmes regarding entrepreneurial education in Romania, which furthermore can support the development of communities, especially the urban ones.
