Abstract: This paper shows the development of worldwide standardization of corporate governance, with special regard to the current European attempts to direct corporate governance towards development of socially responsible behaviour. Achieving a unique stand on the importance of corporate social responsibility is not only a matter of the development of corporate governance but it also provides a basis for analysing development of entrepreneurship in small and medium sized enterprises. Institutional framework for development of social responsibility is set on international standards and principles, on national laws, as well as ethical codes of the business organizations and its associations. It is a prerequisite for establishing individual responsibility in business.
