Functions of Corporate Headquarters: Concentration in Tokyo

Tadao Miyakawa and Naohisa Wada

Japanese Economy, 1987, vol. 15, issue 4, 3-37

Abstract: Introduction: It is not always easy to say what the central functions of a corporation are. It is usually believed, as a matter of common understanding, that these functions are borne by the corporate headquarters. However, not all the functions of the corporate headquarters are central, and frequently the central functions are partially shared by departments and sections that are not located at the headquarters. Still, we can safely say that it is the headquarters that plays the pivotal role in performing these functions.
