Abstract: This paper analyses the income distribution in Modena in 2016, using imposable income as it has been collected in tax returns for the application of Irpef (Imposta sui Redditi delle Persone Fisiche), the Italian individual income tax. After the Introduction, in which the limits in working with such data are explained, the first section shows the results referred to the totality of contributors, mainly focusing on differences between male and female contributors, as the latter reveal lower mean and median incomes than same-age men; between 2002 and 2016 median real income in Modena decreased by 10%, with a major fall among male taxpayers. The section ends with some inequality analyses, highlighting an increase in inequality in the period between 2002 and 2016. The identification of resident contributors, thanks to tax and registry data matching, has permitted an analysis of income distribution based on urban district of residence and on taxpayer nationality. Concerning territorial distribution, median imposable incomes do not reveal huge differences from district to district, although the ones situated in the southern part of the city tend to point out higher levels. 9.4% of resident taxpayers has a foreign nationality; among same-age people, Italians’ median income is much higher than the foreigners’ one, especially among women only. The final section takes family as analysis unit and it reports median family and equivalent income levels by components’ number and by family types.
