Abstract:
This paper studies the development of outsourcing behaviour of industrial French enterprises between 1984 and 2000. The database is the enterprises annual survey which deals with individual data about French enterprises. The «make or buy» behaviour is of great concern in the theoretical literature but has not led to empirical contributions for its evaluation. Except a few sectional surveys, only one statistical study has been made by the SESSI. This institution publishes an annual report about industrial outsourcing but without proposing longitudinal analysis. This paper presents first the methodology necessary to study the evolution of outsourcing. And then, results concern on the one hand the general growth of the share of outsourcing expenditures related to production (both in global and individual perspectives), and on the other hand the persistent disparity between enterprises
