Abstract:
In the last five years the opening up of the main furniture markets to imports has continued at full speed and furniture trade has grown much more quickly than furniture consumption. The largest import markets for furniture are the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Japan. This report offers a comprehensive picture of the furniture industry in developing countries, providing data on industrial growth and trends in furniture exports. The report identifies four centres of industrial growth for the furniture industry in developing countries: Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan), South East Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore), Central and Eastern Europe (Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Romania), and Latin America (Mexico and Brazil). South Africa and Turkey are also considered as growth areas, as well as emerging furniture suppliers such as Vietnam, Myanmar, Bulgaria and Lithuania. For each country furniture exports are broken down by country, geographic area and product type (office furniture, kitchen furniture, upholstered furniture, non-upholstered seats, bedroom furniture, seats parts, furniture parts, other furniture). Furniture supply, furniture manufacturers' location and competitive advantages are also provided, as well as short profiles of the main furniture exporters (with analysis of sales performance, product mix, employees, turnover and export markets, where available). The main furniture fairs are also mentioned. Factors determining the demand for furniture are examined for the main furniture importing countries (the United States, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom). For each country furniture imports are provided by country and geographic area, as well as data on the main European furniture distribution chains (location, furniture sales).
