Cahiers de recherche from Universite de Montreal, Departement de sciences economiques

Abstract: In an Important Study Published in 1982, Newhouse, Williams, Bennett and Schwartz (Nwbs Hereafter) Analysed the Geographical Distribution of Physicians Using Us Data and Emphasized That the Physician's Ability to Create Demand Is Neither Necessary Nor Sufficient to Yield a Prediction of Nondiffusion. the Object of Our Paper Is Twofold. Firstly We Present a Simple Model in Order to Formalize the Theoretical Considerations of Nwbs and to Show Under What Conditions Their+ Conclusions Are Consistent with Those Predicted by the Model. Secondly, We Present an Empirical Analysis of the Model Using Probit Procedure and Data for the Province of Quebec. in Conclusion, Our Results Are Summarized and Policy Implications Are Discussed.
