Abstract: The aim of the paper is to present competition and competitiveness in the pharmaceutical industry. Their concepts and definitions are discussed. The types of competition and their application in the pharmaceutical industry are described. The results of the paper define a wide range of definitions and relatively few quantitative criteria for measuring competition and competitiveness. The ability to use resources effectively is a common feature of both competition and competitiveness. Research and innovation are key to competition in the pharmaceutical industry, while policy by state for intellectual property forming competitiveness in the pharmaceutical industry.
