Abstract:
In the past year, the DGB unions in Germany negotiated wage and salary agreements for some 8.9 million employees. The wage agreements were once again higher when compared to the previous year. Months containing zero increases and lump-sum payments played only a minor role. Lasting increases in levels of collectively agreed basic pay were mostly agreed for the entire term of new contracts. This resulted in an overall annual increase in nominal wage rates of an average of 2.7 percent (2011: 2.0 percent). This means a real (price-adjusted) increase of 0.7%. Among the qualitative topics discussed were the limiting of temporary work and accordingly better pay levels, the takeover of apprentices following vocational training and demographic developments amongst the workforce.
