Abstract: The dual system of in-company training with integrated vocational education offers young people the opportunity to gain initial training and an academic qualification at the same time. This educational opportunity corresponds with the changed educational behavioral pattern of high-school graduates as well as with the aim of many enterprises to commit qualified school-leavers to their company at an early stage, in order to offer them tailor-made training and education to fit the concern’s needs. The question of whether the graduates of these dual courses of study are replacing the graduates of purely vocational or academic courses cannot be definitely answered on the basis of our empirical research. Our research does indicate that in the operational area of engineering and production, distinct career paths lead to complementary deployment instead of substitution. However, in the operational area of business, especially in banking, common career paths provoke competition resulting in substitution administration. The paper demonstrates how vocational education is of lower significance compared to academic education in this hybrid form of education. The focus of these courses of study is on the practical foundation of the work of engineering and business administration, not on the scientific foundation of skilled work.
