Abstract:
This article proposes a decidedly social-philosophical perspective for analysing the plurality of problems that modern societies face with regard to the social organisation of work, especially those in transition towards post-growth societies. Most notably, social philosophy is interested in the question of how the connection between work and social integration in modern societies might constrain or enable a new understanding of work in post-growth societies. Taking up Hegel’s social philosophy, an ethically sound understanding of work is developed that emphasises its cooperative nature. This can open a non-reductionist view of the complex ethical problems facing modern societies today with regard to the organisation of work, which, it is argued, can be fruitfully understood as “social pathologies of work”.
