Abstract: Health-related self-help organizations have been promoted for several years by the associations of the statutory health insurance in the framework of § 20 h of the German Social Code Book 5 (SGB V). In the light of the dynamic developments in the self-help landscape, this study examines the spectrum of tasks and activities, the networking and the self-conception of the supported national self-help organizations. With regard to the increasing professionalization of the national self-help organizations, the question of the position of the original self-help principle within the supported association work arises in greater depth. By examining the funding documents, it is to be more closely analysed to what extent the original self-help is at the centre of the tasks and activities of the self-help organizations and has an identity-forming function.
