Abstract: The paper elaborates the phenomenon and terminology of social cooperatives and argues that these cooperatives are commonwealth orientated businesses. In contrast to the classical cooperative model social cooperatives contribute primarily to the commonwealth. The question of a „social aim“ for cooperative businesses is discussed, too.
