Abstract: In this article, the assessments of founders of energy cooperatives from 2011 are analysed and put into the context of current research. Inhibiting and promoting factors are assigned to the four dimensions of business foundations, the founding person, the founding environment, the founding company and the founding process. The attractiveness of energy cooperatives is explained with their transformation potentials in the context of a sustainable and decentralized energy provision. The amendments to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) since 2012 have proved to be the greatest obstacle to the founding of new cooperatives. In order for energy cooperatives to remain viable for the future, adjustments to the legal framework and/or adaptation of the business models to the legal framework seem necessary.
