No 2026-12, Discussion Papers from Nottingham Interdisciplinary Centre for Economic and Political Research (NICEP)

Abstract: We provide novel evidence on the media coverage of business and economics scholars. We document a large gender gap, especially among financial economists. Male scholars are 9% more likely to be covered (16% in finance) and appear in 7% more articles (25%). The gap cannot be explained by topic choice: it persists in the subsample of articles that mention research papers. Here, male co-authors are more likely to be named than female co-authors of tthe same papers. Consistent with demand-side explanations, male journalists are less likely to write about female researchers. Female researchers do not engage in less outreach: female researchers are just as likely to comment on topics outside their research. We provide a public version of the coverage instances in our data.
