A New Framework for Systems Science

Abstract:
This paper proposes a new framework which allows the development of a unified systems theory. Through a thought experiment, a counter-materialistic worldview is introduced, suggesting that the essence of the world is holistic, processual, and ever-changing. This processualized world can be presented as a holistic interaction network, within which any selected part is defined as a system. The indivisible connection between systems and their environments indicates that openness is an inherent attribute of any system. Consequently, only those systems that effectively reduce their openness can ensure survival, leading to the principle of "survival of the closed." This principle sheds light on challenging issues in systems science, such as the origin of the world's hierarchical structure. Furthermore, it highlights a conflict between this principle and the Second Law of Thermodynamics, suggesting a significant paradigm shift from the traditional materialistic framework to the proposed new one.
