Abstract:
Media effects research overwhelmingly focuses on mass media’s influence on the individual. Much less attention is paid to media’s ecological effects, that is, media’s influence on places – counties, cities, towns, and so on. In this chapter, I will first briefly trace the history of communication studies to explain the field’s orientation toward individual-level analyses. Then, I will discuss the methodological importance of considering spatial dependence and heterogeneity in aggregate-level analyses. Finally, I will demonstrate how to incorporate spatial methods in communication research through a study of the relationship between local news availability and non-institutional political engagement in the United States.
