Abstract: Background and aim: Electronic health records (EHR) systems are commonly depicted as important tools for improving the safety, quality, and continuity of care. As part of its national e-health strategy launched in July 2010, Ghana has been implementing EHR on a limited scale, focusing on teaching, and regional and district hospitals. This proposed scoping review aims to identify and map the current empirical evidence on the development and scale-up challenges and successes of EHR in Ghana. Methodology: We will follow Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses modified for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) reporting guidelines. Searches will be conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Scopus. Search for grey literature will also be conducted on the websites of relevant institutions such as the Ministry of Health, Ghana. The search will be limited to publications in the English language with no restrictions on study designs and publication dates. Implication for health management and policy: This review will identify and map the breadth of the evidence on various dimensions of Ghana’s EHR system, explicating what components of the system have been studied across primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care.
