Abstract: This essay was published in March of 2021 as a chapter in the book "Whither the Arctic Ocean?" and attempts to broadly visualize possible socio-ecological states of the future Arctic. To enable a sustainable Arctic system, an international adaptive strategy is advocated to include specific governance and policy styles, as well as specific resource management and regenerative economy practices. These are broadly discussed in the context of a fastly changing planet in order to identify vulnerabilities and desirable socio-ecological pathways leading to a flourishing Arctic. A simple conceptual model summarizes perspectives and recipes.
