Abstract: Walkable cities are of increased interest for urban planners and active transportation professionals, where a greater understanding of pedestrian behaviors is needed. This presentation discusses an approach for measuring spatiotemporal macro-behaviors of walking activity in urban environments using anonymized, individual, locative, passively-collected data recorded by popular physical activity mobile applications. With this data, we explore the characteristics of aggregated pedestrian activity within the physical and social milieu of the city at scale, with temporal detail, and in consideration of the infrastructural and urban characteristics influencing individual activity.
